Russell Smith Guest Preacher

Sept4thsermonRSmith

The BBC would like to cordially thank Russell Smith, who put together a fantastic church service yesterday Sunday September 4th, 2011. If you missed it you might be a little disappointed. But no worries I am hear to catch you up.

Pastor Russell Smith preached about Hebrews 1:1-14  which is a sermon on the subject of the necessity of a persevering faith. It is a warning against apostasy and an encouragement to these Jewish Christians to press on to the end. Throughout the letter we are told that if we want to receive the promise – by which this preacher means the fulfillment of salvation in the world to come – we must hold on firmly to the gospel and to Jesus Christ to the end. These Jewish Christians were being tempted to return to Judaism; some of them apparently already had.

The first 14 verses of chapter 1 convey this message: While God spoke to men in Old Testament times, He has spoken fully and finally in His Son, who is vastly superior to the angels. In the first 4 verses of chapter 2, the author pauses to make a pointed application: We dare not neglect the message God has spoken in His Son. He did this, not for angels, but for men. Having identified with men, He is able to help us in our time of need.

One comment from Pastor Smith that really hit home was:

Where would we be without the word of God?
Russell Smith

What a great question! I have to say it is unimaginable.

Hebrews 1:1-14

1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

The Son Superior to Angels

5 For to which of the angels did God ever say,

“You are my Son;
today I have become your Father”?

Or again,

“I will be his Father,
and he will be my Son”?

6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says,

“Let all God’s angels worship him.”

7 In speaking of the angels he says,

“He makes his angels spirits,
and his servants flames of fire.”

8 But about the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;
a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
by anointing you with the oil of joy.”

10 He also says,

“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.
11 They will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
12 You will roll them up like a robe;
like a garment they will be changed.
But you remain the same,
and your years will never end.”

13 To which of the angels did God ever say,

“Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet”?

14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

Revelation 4:8b

And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, LORD God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Homecoming September 11th

Homecoming2011

Homecoming Sunday, September 11th, 2011

It is a time when a person who has chosen to leave the home church for what ever reason gets a chance to come back to the home place where her/she first accepted Christ. At this time they get a chance to become reacquainted with the foundation that they received the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior and also eat, fellowship with some old friendly and familiar faces that they may not have seen in some time.

Yep, Sept 11. Matt Goodman, evangelism director for Morgan County Association will be preaching.

Special music and remembrance of 9/11 will take place.

And of course, food fun an fellowship follow.

Please comment and let us know you will be there!

7/10 Prayer Challenge

PrayerPost

Continue to use this process to pray for BBC and its ministries. 7 days a week for 10 minutes each day is all you need to do to participate.

Why wouldn’t I want you to continue praying? Isn’t it time to stop asking or at least time to change the prayer a little? Maybe you tell yourself that God is tired of hearing the same thing over and over again?”

When the Lord Jesus taught on prayer, He encouraged His disciples to relate to the Heavenly Father with childlike faith, words, and behavior. His central teaching on prayer, Luke 11:1-13, reads like a kindergarten lesson plan rather than a seminary course.

Model Prayer

It is often called “The Lord’s Prayer” because it was spoken by Jesus. But, a more appropriate description would be “The Model Prayer,” since it was spoken by Jesus to his disciples upon their request to “teach us to pray” (Lk.1 l : l ff). The model set forth by Jesus is as follows:

Our Father who art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, soon earth. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen (Matt. 6:9-13).

What is prayer?

Prayer is the practice of the presence of God. It is the place where pride is abandoned, hope is lifted, and supplication is made. Prayer is the place of admitting our need, of adopting humility, and claiming dependence upon God. Prayer is the needful practice of the Christian. Prayer is the exercise of faith and hope. Prayer is the privilege of touching the heart of the Father through the Son of God, Jesus our Lord.

The Bible speaks much of prayer. But, sometimes, too often, we ignore prayer and seek to accomplish in the strength of our own wills those things that we desire to have or happen. For those of us who are too often guilty of this, we need to bow our knees, confess our sin, receive God’s forgiveness, and beg that the will of the Lord be done above our own. God is sovereign and loving and He knows what is best for us and others, even if it doesn’t always seem to make the most sense.

We so often come to the Lord with legitimate requests for healing, conversions, and needs and yet the answers we hope for often do not come. We wonder and sometimes doubt. Yet, we persevere and praise God. We pray because we know that God hears us and because we desire to see results. We should pray by faith, trusting God. We should pray consistently, trusting God. We should pray for healing, trusting God. We should pray for others, trusting God. We should pray and when our prayers are answered or are not answered remember this: If we knew what the Lord knew, we wouldn’t change a thing.

Prayer changes the one praying because in prayer, you are in the presence of God as you lay before Him your complete self in confession and dependence. There is nothing to hide when in quiet supplication we are reaching into the deepest part of ourselves and admitting our needs and failures. In so doing, our hearts are quieted and pride is stripped and we enjoy the presence of God. James 4:8 says, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”
